- Standing / sitting in front of each other
- Standing / sitting opposite to each other.
So let’s start with standing / sitting in front of each other:
Today we will learn about the how to solve linear seating arrangement facing north and south ( sitting or standing in front of each other)
To solve these type of question first you must have to know about the directions and how to write directions on the paper. For that see in the figure. The upside is North downwards is South. Right side is East and left side is west.
As shown in the figure people who are facing to north are placed on the lower row and the people facing toward south are on the upper row.
So now if a person is sitting in a row and facing to the north then left and right of that person will be shown or selected as the figure below:
If a person is sitting in a row and facing to the south then left and right of that person will be shown or selected as the figure below:
So this was the knowledge about left and right side of both directions. Means now you can easily find in which direction you have to place or at left hand or right hand.
Key Point: Some times you can also get a question in which people are sitting in two row facing north and south and in some statement instead of left right you can get sitting nth east or mth west.
- With respect to people facing North, the east will be on right side and west will be on left side.
- But when a person is sitting facing South, then the east will be on left side and west will be on right side.
How to solve linear seating arrangement facing north and south:
Now you can follow the given steps to solve these type of problems easily
- Read all points very carefully.
- Select the point ( statement) that is giving exact information or select two or more points that are related to each other and giving some specific information.
- Place the people of exact location.
- Now again select the point ( statement) with most relative information and place the people on the row.
- Repeat both points and you will get your answer.
Note: Some time you can get a question in which you don’t know the exact position of two members. At that time place both on both position by placing slash (/) between them. But the best way to solve these type of confusion is to draw two separate lines.
Important Point: It is not necessary that you will always get exact positions for all the person.
So now it’s time to take an example to understand this two line seating arrangement problem:
Question: 10 people A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I and J are sitting in two rows facing each other. Half of them are facing North.
- A is sitting in front of E, who is facing north.
- B is sitting in between G and D but neither in front of F nor I.
- F is neighbor or A and H.
- C is 4th left to A and sitting in front of J.
Now according to the question 10 people are sitting in two rows facing each other and half of them are facing north. Means 5 people are facing north and other 5 people facing them or facing north. As shown in the figure:
Now try to find out the point that is giving the exact information and it is combination or 1st and 4th point that is giving us information about A, E, C and j and the direction of all four. Means after reading these point you can decide that A and C are facing South, E and J are facing North. C is 4th left to A means A is sitting at right corner and C is sitting at Left corner. E and J are in front of A and C respectively as shown in figure.
Now 3rd point is giving us the exact information about the place as show in the figure:
Now last point is B is sitting between the G and D. Means now we have only one place in the row 1 that is facing south and 3 place left where people facing towards north. So these people are in the row 2 and B is in middle. So I’s place is in between H and C.
We don’t know about the exact position of G and D. Means you have to place them as shown in the figure:
In this question you don’t know the position of G and D. So if you get question regarding the position of G or D then mark option ” Information is not sufficient” or “Can’t be calculated”
So now you can solve these type of problems easily.
If people standing / sitting opposite to each other:
You can solve these type of questions also from the above rule. The only difference between these problem is now people facing north come to above row and people facing south will be on the bottom row as shown in the figure below:
